Newt is the Doctor, a renegade Time Lord of Gallifrey, who travels throughout space and time in his TARDIS - mainly rescuing and working with rare (and frequently dangerous!) creatures, a great deal of whom end up accompanying him.

Graves is an exasperated human being (or is he?) who, somehow, finds himself accompanying Newt on his travels throughout the universe.
