After all, Newt can hold his own for an impressive amount of time against a wizard as powerful as Grindelwald, is incredibly adaptable and in a real world situation, can wipe the floor with just about everyone.
Except Newt tries desperately to get out of the entire thing, claiming that he can't duel. No one takes him seriously until the event happens and it is cringe-inducing to watch.
