After hardworking businessman Percival Graves lost his house and savings to the powerful and unscrupulous businessman Mr Scamander, Percival is burning for revenge. He finds it in the form of Scamander son, Newt kidnaps Newt, and issues a random, saying they will kill Newt unless their demands are met.
The ransom is intended to pay back all those who Mr Scamander stole from, and Percival feels morally justified. But things don’t turn out to be as simple.
Percival assumes Newt will be a spoilt brat, scheming and unscrupulous – every bit as bad as his father. Instead Newt is quiet, clumsy and almost painfully shy. When Percival intends to humiliate Newt before handing him back to his father but quickly realises Newt has already been damaged, much worse than he could ever do. The marks…scars on his back, legs and…elsewhere are testament to that. Percival is horrified, and feels terrible at adding to Newt’s trauma. To make things more complicated, Percival has already begun to fall for his captive and Newt begins to open up to him, especially when Percival friends Queenie and Tina are brought in to help. Slowly, Newt begins to trust them all, to learn to be loved and cared for, and he is never far from Percival’s side, and though this horrible circumstance, some good might come from it.
Trouble appears when Scamander makes it clear not only he’ll refuse the ransom, but if Graves doesn’t kill Newt, he will if his son is returned. It turns out Newt has an older brother, Theseus, who has been away but adores Newt and is determined to rescue Newt from his kidnapper and worse, take him home, unaware of the truth, and unwilling to listen to Percival.
