Percival is found and rescued thanks to Newt, but the ordeal has left him hurt in ways never thought possible. The torture Grindelwald put him through had left Percival with such severe nerve damage that he barely feels anything physically. On top of that, Percival has closed himself off emotionally in an effort to keep his sanity. Percival recovers from his other injuries, while the nerve damage seems permanent as far as the medical personnel believe. Percival throws himself back into work, colder and distant than ever, and keeping his nerve damage a secret, using his occlumency shields to hide his thoughts from Queenie, who along with Tina and Madam President are the only ones he allows close and even then the walls are up. Months go by with Percival suffering silently.
Newt being the caring and perceptive person that he is, immediately notices how wrong things are the next time he sees Percival. Knowing he has to tread lightly in approaching Percival, Newt gently but surely starts to form a friendship with Percival. He's persistent, but not to where he's overbearing. It's when enough trust is built up that Newt brings Percival into the case, where along with the many fantastic beasts, a slowly recovering Credence is there waiting to greet them.
Credence too can sense that something is terribly wrong with the real Percival. Together, Newt and Credence gently get Percival to reveal his gut-wrenching secret. Newt and Credence are devastated, but then Newt remembers that there is a special creature among his darlings that can help heal Percival. Newt leaves Credence to comfort Percival as best as he can while he goes to the creature and asks for its help. The creature gives Newt what he needs, like a fang or a scale. Newt creates a potion and together, he and Credence lovingly apply it to Percival's skin. Percival's damaged nerves are slowly healed and he is overwhelmed as he finally FEELS for the first time in month. The innocent touches soon turn sensuous as Percival wants more of Newt and Credence's touch. They make love together and it is the most cathartic experience the three of them have ever had.
