Ahh, OP worked late last night (and slept in this morning), so I apologize for not commenting sooner, but I STILL LOVE THIS FIC! :D I am totally not opposed to some plot and drama (and snuggles, just as long as they come at the end) on top of the sparkly clothes, and I think it's awesome that you pulled, y'know, an actual dramatic story out of my silly prompt. I love the extra layers to the characters' interactions now that some external conflict (on top of poor Newt's internal conflict) has been introduced, and I can't wait for the next parrrttt (and the reveal...?) :DDD
When the song ends Newt dips her and holds her steady as the last notes fade away. His grip is deceptively strong for someone who is not only slender but goes out of his way to be make himself as small and unthreatening as possible most of the time. His scarf falls forward and drapes over her skin. Part of her wants to laugh when it happens, but the rest of her is caught up in the way he stares into her eyes.
The whole description of Newt and Queenie dancing (ahhh, so pretty to imagine the sight!) is particularly lovely. I used to dance a fair bit myself on a college team, and you do such a nice job of describing what it feels like to lead and follow (when it really works, haha). It was nice to vicariously relive a little of that experience through the characters.
Queenie watches Newt’s shoulders ripple under the lace straps of his gown. His back is surprisingly well-muscled and it shows in how the light plays over his skin as he moves. [...] At one point during the song Jacob gives Newt a particularly enthusiastic turnout that has the skirt of his dress flies up just enough for her to see the top of his stockings and the garter belt clip holding it up.
YES GOOD. I'm so glad Newt finally got his moment in the spotlight... even if it had to come before the fall, which makes it all the more wrenching... ;_;
Jacob pulls himself to his full height and crosses his arms, glowering darkly. “You aren’t wanted here. Your request for a dance was turned down, as is any woman’s right. You have been asked to leave, so you will leave. Now.”
“This is no wom-” Hammond starts.
Jacob punches Hammond in his square jaw. Hammond stumbles a few steps back, sputtering about ‘outrages’, but Jacob and Queenie ignore him - Jacob stands at Newt’s side as though trying to shield Newt from the rest of the ballroom and rubs the back of his neck. He is shaking.</>
YES JACOB GET 'IM GOOD ;A; is really all the coherent reaction I have to this. Ahhh, poor Newt, my heart... I'm so glad he has Queenie and Jacob, but I have a feeling things are about to get a little more painful until the final reveal... ;w;
