Graves is found alive, barely. Credence, brought into the fold and being trained in basic magics, sees Graves' recovery as a resurrection. He starts comparing Graves to God's Son in his mind, first guiltily, then more worshipfully.

At first Credence keeps to himself, but as time passes the two become closer. Graves isn't immune to Credence's charms, though the young man isn't aware that he has any. Credence has no experience with relationships or sex, the only true love he's ever felt is for God and for Christ. But he feels something powerful, warm, welcoming, and terrifying when he's with Mr. Graves.
