Advice on AO3 character tags?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-22 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
If one were, say, writing a fic with a Graves who was not Grindelwald, but did in fact act quite a bit like Grindel!Graves and simply ignored any plot elements having to do with Johnny Depp, what would be the best way to tag this on AO3? Tagging Grindel!Graves wouldn't make sense in context, but the character as written is not anything like how Original!Graves is commonly assumed/accepted to be. After taking a look through the Archive I haven't been able to find much precedent, so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I'd say tag it as Original Percival Graves, and mention in the notes that your characterisation of Graves is darker than most people seem to headcanon him, just like you've explained here.

Popular fanon isn't canon. Graves is still a mostly unknown character, and your darker Graves is every bit as valid as anyone else's Graves headcanons.

+1 to what the other anon said; tag it with Original Graves and if you like, a 'dark!Graves' tag or something similar, or mention it in the notes. Some people write Grindelwald-supporter Graves, which is another valid interpretation! We don't exactly have enough information on Graves to tell.

OP

Thank you! That makes sense and seems reasonable. And I definitely appreciate the reminder and support about all character interpretations being valid :)
