Seeing as we've reached 4,000 comments in Round 1, it's time to make a new one. Same (lack of) rules apply. Gentle reminder to everyone to refrain from posting extremely long prompts, though. While no word limit will be imposed, take note that it is very unlikely for someone to fulfill your prompt if your prompt alone is already several paragraphs long and containing a number of specifications.

So there was a lot to like about the movie, but, NGL, it was whiter than a mayo sandwich on a porcelain plate full of rice. And, charming as Redmayne is, I still would INFINITELY rather have seen a Black British Newt (maybe Nathan Stewart Jarret), both because REPRESENTATION MATTERS GODDAMMIT and because it would just have made for much richer and more interesting storytelling - especially with segregation being one of the movie's themes.

So: go crazy, Nonny. How would Newt's experiences have been different in Muggle New York if he were black?

Or, best of all, racebend the whole damn movie, so Picquery is the only white character outside of the Wizengamot.

Or anywhere in between - maybe Jacob's from Mumbai? Maybe the Goldstein sisters are Korean? IDK, Nonny, just for the love of God, give me some melanin. Gen, het, slash, whatevs.

Im a korean and this is new to me, sorry for misunderstanding because im curious, what would be different if goldsteins were korean? Examples please?

Not OP, so I'm sorry if I misread the prompt, but here's what I think:

The Goldsteins are Jewish (at least, their last name is). There were Jews in Japan and China, (though I don't know about Korea) so the sisters could totally be Jewish and Asian-American, and that would be really cool! It would be cool because mainstream American movies don't get a lot of Asian-American main characters (or Jewish main characters). And representation matters (both to the people within and outside the group being represented).

OP here - I picked 'Korean' out of thin air - I could as easily have said Ethiopian, Arabic, Hispanic, ANYTHING. My point is that the only non-white person, Muggle or Wizard, in the entire movie (except for the wizengamot scene) is Picquery. And in 2016, for a movie about a magical world where actual racism is supposedly nonexistant (and replaced by wizard/muggle prejudices) that is just utter bullshit afaic. I think they fucked up, and that they missed a glorious opportunity to make the Wizarding World rich and diverse and interesting.

I grant that including Jewish characters is a big improvement over not including Jewish characters (and I did write a prompt asking writers to explore the Goldsteins' Jewish heritage in the first round) but the wall-to-wall whiteness is still crap afaic, and I'd really like fanfic that creates chromatic characters instead.

(Personally I don't mind if that means making Jacob, or Tina and Queenie, Catholic, Muslim or whatever instead of Jewish, and renaming them accordingly, although I can understand why some people would take umbrage at that - I just want AUs where we have the same narrative roles being performed by people who are from different backgrounds. I'd love to get glimpses of other magical traditions that have emigrated to New York - Arabic, or Swahili, or Thai, or whatever.)

The HP movies (which were notable for concentrating on the white characters) did at least consistently present racial diversity IN THE BACKGROUND. FBAWTFT didn't even do that.

For one, they wouldn’t be real citizens. America didn’t allow Asians to be citizens until about 1965 and they couldn’t be naturalized until after the Second World War. They could own property, but they aren’t really Americans and tended to live together in towns because non-Asians had a tendency to be cruel. In the 19th century it was a game for them to chase down singular Asian men (usually Chinese) and beat them before they cut their hair off.

I'm quite sure that the time period had something to do with that. I mean, New York in the 1920s was almost 98% white. It doesn't make sense to have a main cast of minority immigrants... Not that it's wrong to want to race-bend them in fic, of course, but it really wouldn't have made sense for the time period of the movie (unless it was set somewhere other than a predominantly white country).

Also, OP, if you look at a story with characters from different countries (USA, England, Poland in Jacob's case), who have different backstories, who were raised in different way and in different cultures, and everything you see is their skin colour then it's you, you have a problem, OP, not that movie.

Absolutely atrocious to have PoC characters in a movie about magic and fantastical creatures right? Let's also not forget that there were millions of immigrants in America during the 20s.
