Another MiniFill - The Niffler

If there was one thing to say about Gideon Prewett it’s that he’s a trooper.

He didn’t have natural smarts but he slogged through his school years. And if he happened to put more hours in at the library than what the other Gryffindors considered healthy only to get a report that would make a Ravenclaw cry then, well, at least he passed. He’d take his As and two EEs with pride.

His family didn’t have connections in the ministry but Gideon still managed to get a job there. It was mucking out the stalls in the Beast Division; hardly glamorous but it kept food on the table. Most importantly it’s how he meets Newt.

Newt with a heart as big as the inside of his case, who doesn’t care that he’s stuck literally shovelling shit , who wants nothing more than to help the creatures Gideon cleans up after.

And it’s perfect. They’re perfect.

Until The Niffler. ( yes it deserves capitals, the little spawn of Mordred)

Because if there was one other thing to say about Gideon Prewett, it’s that he is proud of what he owns.

It’s logical, really. He worked hard and got paid little so what he did have he treasured. The Niffler didn’t care about this, about Gideon. It saw the shiny and took the shiny. Gideon’s collection of limited edition coins, the buttons off his favourite waist coat, the fancy silverware meant for special occasions (bought on sale and likely containing very little actual silver but they looked real); it all vanished down The Niffler’s pouch.

But Gideon is a trooper. Each time he finds something missing he goes to Newt, voice calm but becoming more strained as time goes on and it keeps happening. He always gets his things back in the end and Newt is worth the effort. It isn’t until the Pocket Watch Incident that it becomes too much for Gideon.

He hadn’t even known it was missing; he’d gone to Newt to get his good belt back, starting the routine of Newt chasing down The Niffler and shaking out whatever it had stashed away. Gideon watched in horror as his pocket watch, the one gifted to him on his seventeenth birthday and inarguably the most valuable thing he owned and likely would ever own, fell from the creature and hit the floor boards at exactly the right angle to completely shatter.

“...I’ll fix that,” Newt stutters out after a heavy silence, even The Niffler seeming to feel the weight of what had happened. “Let me just put Nicky away and then a quick reparo and-”

“It has to go.”

“-It’ll be good as...I’m sorry, what was that?”

“Just that one. I can’t...Please, Newt, just that one?”

There’s another heavy silence. Then Newt finally answers, so quiet in a way he’s never been to Gideon.

“The ministry will have her executed. And she was raised in captivity; she can’t fend for herself...”

Silence again.

---

Newt moves out the next day. Gideon does his best to move on.

The watch gets fixed but it’s never quite the same.
