After his defeat by Dumbledore, Grindelwald knew his plans to rule the world would never succeed. However, he was still a powerful wizard and wasn't content to remain prisoner. He escaped and transfigured and obliviated someone else to look like, act like, and believe he was Grindelwald. Meanwhile, Grindelwald decided that if he couldn't rule the world with Dumbledore at his side, he'd be damned if he didn't at least live an ordinary life with Dumbledore at his side. He disguised himself as a professor and insinuated himself in Dumbledore's life. Maybe he just wanted his friend back. Maybe he planned on slowly seducing Dumbledore to the dark side. Or maybe he planned to eventually take his revenge. Whatever original motives, by the time Half-blood Prince comes around, Grindelwald has been in a romantic relationship with Dumbledore (who still thinks Grindelwald's a Hogwarts professor)for several decades. It could be perfectly genuine affection or maybe it's a twisted, super psycho love. But whatever the reason, Grindelwald isn't about to let anyone kill Dumbeldore. He ends up saving Dumbledore in HBP and teaming up with him to defeat Voldemort.
