Fill 5/?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-22 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Newt had avoided his brother before going to bed the night before, and he wasn’t successful at avoiding Theseus over breakfast.

His older brother walked into the family’s smaller, personal dining room to see Newt pouring himself tea.

“The accent you picked up in your years abroad, that I can understand being beyond you to choose. But the way you avoid coffee, I’ll never understand,” Theseus said, sitting down next to Newt, his coffee cup thudded against the table.

Newt rolled his eyes, and took a bite of his toast. Theseus waited until Newt finished eating before saying, “You know, father won’t really make you go through with this. Not if you don’t want to. We can always send you back to Oxford, you’d be safe there.”

“Safe from who? Grindelwald? Mr. Graves?” Newt asked, confused.

“Either, both. It’s not worth - you don’t have to submit to belonging to someone for some extra guns for the family,” Theseus replied.

“It’s not just some extra guns though, is it?” Newt insists, “It has to be more than that for you and father to involve someone else. I don’t know as much about this as you do, but - well, it’s not hard to see Mr. Graves is an important man. Father’s too proud to ask for help unless things were desperate.”

Theseus went white. He looked away, and couldn’t meet Newt’s eyes.

“I - I can’t tell you,” Theseus said.

“Why not? Because I’m not - not a gun toting sort of man?” Newt continues, outraged.

“Because father wants to keep you safe - we both want to keep you safe,” Theseus replied.

“And I can’t want the same for you?” Newt’s voice rose. He could feel his hands start to shake.

“You don’t - you weren’t born for this life,” Theseus argued, “That’s why you were sent to study abroad. You agreed to it at the time - you should agree to it now.”

“You weren’t at risk of dying then, were you?” Newt stood up, “You don’t have to give me details, but I would like to know when you’re at risk.”

Theseus glared at him, “It’s not your place to worry about us.”

“I’m your brother,” Newt said outraged, “of course I worry.”

Theseus put his hand through his hair and sighed.

“Besides, it’s hardly as though you’re asking me to - to pick up a gun and get in the fight,” Newt continued.

“No, instead we’re asking you to - to prostitute yourself in exchange for the Graves’ family’s protection.”

“I - it’s hardly prostitution. It’s not as though he - he doesn’t seem like he just wants sex,” Newt blushed.

“How could you know?” Theseus asked derisively, “You’re hardly an expert in these matters.”

“He isn’t - he’s not some brute” Newt said, then sat down looking dejected, “he isn’t, I don’t know, he doesn’t seem like how you all talk about Grindelwald.”

“He arranged to - to - have you the first time he met you,” Theseus replies, “that’s hardly the mark of a man I’d trust.”

Newt blinked, then stared at Theseus for a long moment.

“What did you think happened in the kennel? That we -” Newt wasn’t sure if he should be mortified, or if he should laugh.

“Didn’t you?” Theseus asked, startled.

“No! He wanted to meet Tilly again, and then he kissed me. That was all.”

“Meet Tilly again?” Theseus responded and Newt realized he had made a mistake.

“I - she got out of my study, before the meeting. He stopped her from getting out of the house. She seemed very taken with him,” Newt responded.

“She was taken with him, or you were?” Theseus asked carefully.

“I - well, he isn’t unattractive,” Newt said, then flushed, “he does seem to genuinely like dogs, you know. I don’t think it’s an act to - to impress me. I don’t see why he’d try to impress me at all, really.”

“Why wouldn’t someone want to impress you? You always sell yourself short,” Theseus argued.

“I’m - well, I’m hardly the kind of men people generally want,” Newt replied, “I’m far too thin and I spend more time with animals than people.”

“Newt don’t -” Theseus cut himself off, “none of this is the point. When did you meet Graves for the first time? And why didn’t you tell anyone.”

“It was just before he went to meet with you and father - and, well, I didn’t know who he was at the time, and after it was easier not to say anything. I didn’t want father angry at me.” Newt admitted.

Theseus sighed.

“It’s hardly as though I’m signing my life away. He’s an attractive man. I doubt he has difficulty finding bedfellows.” Newt said dejectedly.

Theseus shook his head, “In all the time I’ve known him, he’s never had a - a boyfriend or lover. It’s not a secret he prefers men, but he never seemed to want an attachment. It was a surprise when the subject of possibly having our family’s join outside of business as well as within came up. Father just assumed he wanted me under his thumb.”

“Oh,” Newt said, sitting down again. He looked down at his plate. Theseus moved closer, and put an arm over his shoulders.

“And now he and I can’t figure out if this is to keep us in line, to show trust to our men, or because he somehow developed an interest in you personally,” Theseus said. He paused, and looked at Newt closely. Newt could feel his brother’s eyes on him, and pulled himself inward and looked down.

“He doesn’t seem like the sort to fake interest. He’s always been too frank for that,” Theseus said, “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want.”

“What if I don’t know what I want?” Newt replied, “I want to be treated as an adult. I want to make my own choices, and come and go as I please. I didn’t want a life surrounded by - by violence” Newt felt a pang of guilt when Theseus flinched, but continued on, “and yet I love my family. I also find myself - well - I find myself interested in a man whose capacity for violence does yours.”

He turned to look at Theseus, “I haven’t agreed to anything beyond another visit.”

Theseus took a long drink of coffee, then replied to Newt, “If he hurts you, Grindelwald be damned, I’ll come get you and escort you back to England myself.”

Newt’s eyes began to water.

“Thank you,” he said, throat tight.

“And if this interest turns into anything more than kissing with your dogs as chaperones, I can probably give you better advice than father can,” Theseus said, humour creeping back into his voice. Newt turned bright red.

“Theseus!” He said, scandalized, “I - that’s hardly something I need to worry about now! I only just met the man.”

“Did you think of him that way, before you were introduced?” Theseus inquired.

“I thought he was handsome, for how gentle he was with Tilly,” Newt replied.

Theseus rang the bell, calling for a maid to clear the breakfast dishes.

“Just, be careful with him,” Theseus said, then left the room.

Newt, finished his tea, then left for his study. Pickett slid out of his pocket and started slithering into his sleeve. He looked at the little snake, and said, “I wish people were as easy to understand as you.”

Newt collected the supplies for feeding the dogs, deposited Pickett in his habitat, then left to feed the dogs. He was playing with them when a maid came to tell him his guests had arrived.

I love your Theseus here! Great fill, can't wait for more. (I wonder if Mafia!Graves is quite conscious of what he's letting himself in for, animal-wise.)
