(Anonymous) 2016-12-01 05:53 am (UTC)(link)It wasn't Newt's fault... all unbonded omegas smelled sweet to unbonded alphas. Supposedly Alphas smelled spicy or something to omegas but Credence wasn't too sure about that. When they went to the dining car to get dinner that evening, Credence stepped away to the door outside for some fresh air. When he got back, Newt was awkwardly engaged in a conversation with a ... muggle (?)... and the burly man was leaning on the table next to Newt's sitting form. Credence, without thinking, barreled over and plunked himself down right next to the redhead and settled his arm across the back of the omega's chair, grimacing up at the older alpha in what he hoped was a brave sneer but what he was sure was just a terrified wince.
"He's t-t-taken," Credence said finally to the slouching man, who removed the cigar hanging out of his mouth and shook it over the floor so ash fell everywhere. Then he laughed.
"No, see here, son, that's a quality omega and I just don't see a scrawny little thing like you taking care of a prime piece like that," he chuckled again, but sat up and sauntered away, "I'll let you have your fun though. Never say ol' Gus stood in the way of an alpha's first pitch."
Credence blushed darkly and dared a look at Newt, who wasn't even paying attention. When Newt was embarrassed, Credence had quickly found out, his entire exposed body turned a deep scarlet and he was terrible at hiding it. But right now Newt was just calmly eating his soup and looking at a copy of the /Daily Prophet/, a paper from the alleyway they'd visited in which the pictures moved.
"I, uhm, apologize if that was a bit forward of m-me, Mr. Scamander," Credence stammered, beginning to withdraw his arm.
"Hm?" Newt said, looking up but not quite at Credence, as was his way, "Oh, has he gone? Dreadful sorry about that. I run into quite a few of those barmy alphas in these parts. I just learned to ignore them," he smiled over at Credence oblivious to the boy's mixed feelings of relief and depression. On the one hand he was glad Newt hadn't noticed his inadvertent claim, but on the other he was sad that ... Newt hadn't noticed his claim.
The trip went on in this fashion for another week before they disembarked in Eastern Europe. Newt had continued to grow sweeter much to Credence's chagrin and every passing alpha's interest. The zoologist was clueless to the havoc he was wreaking on everyone he passed. Eventually they got off the train and out of the stuffy, cold, tiny car.
Newt dragged Credence to a nearby alley, so Credence thought they'd be traveling again to another alley but Newt just grabbed his arm and they were sucked through a straw and he fell in a heap on the ground in a field. There was a small wrought iron gate and an equally modest house surrounded by wrought fence with a nice, flat yard.
"Family country home," Newt said glibly, marching up to the gate and sticking his wand into the lock. It shimmered for a moment before opening itself. Credence loved magic.
"It's not much, but it's free," Newt said as they shucked off their travel clothing in the entryway. You could tell the place was a vacation home by the sparseness of everything, but it was definitely lived in. There were photos on the mantle of Newt and a taller, bulkier Newt as well as a fierce looking alpha woman with curly red hair and a pleasant beta man with freckles all across his face. Newt's family.
"I think it's wonderful," Credence said, astounded when the pictures began waving at them from the frames. True, this was the only area of the house he'd seen but he loved it already. The only problem was Newt's scent was layered everywhere he went, like he visited fairly regularly, and his fresh scent was permeating the whole place!
