Re: Percival Graves/Newt Scamander, autistic!Newt, ignorant!wizarding world, self loathing!Newt
(Anonymous) 2016-12-05 01:07 am (UTC)(link)And as you said, at least now more people have heard of autism, while back then people tended to view mental illness as a reason to lock someone up and throw away the key. In present day, even if they don't understand it, more people are at least willing to give the behavior a pass. Back then? Newt obviously manages to function and take care of himself (and all of his creatures), but there are still so many things people would give him such a hard time for
Lack of eye contact/shying away from physical contact? Rude.
Special interest in animals/magizoology? Weird.
Infodumping about said special interest? Annoying.
Difficulty dealing with too much stimuli? Too sensitive.
Hyperfocus/tuning everything else out? Probably not that bright.
Stimming/excitement/disproportionate emotional responses? Childish.
I mean, I could go on. But that's why I particularly liked your point of adding Theseus in and having him understand; if there's even just one person on your side, then that's something. There is at least one built-in person who knows Newt and accepts him as he is. Plus sibling/family fluff is kind of a favorite of mine. Plus-plus, if Graves really is as brusque and businesslike as he's shown to be in the film (presuming Grindelwald at least attempted to approximate Graves' behavior so he could pass for him), it might take someone else pointing out "maybe you need to look a little harder" before he realizes Newt isn't just being a general clueless irritation
Re: Percival Graves/Newt Scamander, autistic!Newt, ignorant!wizarding world, self loathing!Newt
(Anonymous) 2016-12-05 04:26 am (UTC)(link)Seems the understanding/sticking up for Newt bit was something I kinda shoved in there somewhere and now I'm embarrassed (apparently slight misinterpretation of a prompt/wording is what embarrasses me, not the consistent, overzealous replies to OP of said prompt but anyway...) so, uh. Sorry. I should honestly probably stop checking Dreamwidth and go to bed or something
Re: Percival Graves/Newt Scamander, autistic!Newt, ignorant!wizarding world, self loathing!Newt
(Anonymous) 2016-12-05 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)So it's like: "oh! Newt's managed to write a book, let's get it published, he'll be so happy!" *money changes hands* "he's interested in animals in the first place, let him, remember crazy Auntie Sarah from Edinburgh, she liked to play with her dogs as well, at least he'll have a hobby" *gets Newt his first puffskein*
He has best intentions, he just doesn't realise that Newt gets actually hurt and embarrassed at his actions although he doesn't speak up because it's still better than getting shipped to the summer villa by their father.
Sooo I guess he'll get extremely shocked by Graves who first treats him like a bumbling idiot he is and then suddenly starts asking for his opinions - and not about magical beasts - as if he's a fully fledged adult and even if he's a bit patronising at times he tends to be patronising towards everyone and it's not Theseus' kind of patronising... It's you-know-it-is-illegal-to-carry-nifflers-into-a-museum-I-am-going-to-stand-here-and-watch-you-try-to-avoid-getting-arrested-with-a-smug-smirk kind of patronising versus here-give-me-your-hand-we-are-going-to-look-for-your-murtlap-together-it-couldn't-have-gotten-far-let's-ask-this-nice-lady.
Omg, know I'm getting embarrassed about the length of that reply. I hope you slept well ;)
Re: Percival Graves/Newt Scamander, autistic!Newt, ignorant!wizarding world, self loathing!Newt
(Anonymous) 2016-12-05 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)And then there's Graves who, if you were to take the "Newt acting as a consultant" route (which is something I've kind of grown to like, honestly, like maybe he's on loan from the Ministry of Magic or something? ...how does magical bureaucracy work?), may treat Newt like something of a nuisance but has to at least take his opinion into account and it actually is useful. So maybe he starts paying more attention to Newt beyond "irritating, good with creatures" and through that kind of realizes that he is a capable adult and everything
But of course that wouldn't stop him from standing back and watching Newt attempt to talk his way out of trouble or pretend like he isn't breaking several dozen laws or think he's actually being subtle about something because damn if it isn't one of the more entertaining things Graves has actually gotten to see in a while (as long no one is causing permanent damage that he'll have to deal with later)
Well we can't both be embarrassed if we're both giving long-winded replies, we just have to cancel each other out :P I'm just waiting to see if someone yells at us for stretching out the meme by bouncing ideas back and forth. And I actually had a migraine last night so sleep wasn't particularly forthcoming, but it's gone now so it's fine. In turn, I hope your classwork is going well c:
