FILL: It's Just Easier 1/2

Warnings: Mentions of torture, graphic descriptions of violence (in part 2)
So, I usually don't share my writing, but I really like how this one is coming out.

It's Just Easier

It is a fact of life that many (most) wizards and witches are rather lacking in common sense. Or perhaps Killian was simply short half a brain. Either way, the result would have been the same. See, Killian, along with his friends Conrad, Leon and Adler, were devout supporters of Gellert Grindewald. Killian himself was one of the Dark Wizards first supporters, and perhaps that is why he felt so obligated to take revenge on those who so humiliated his master in New York.

Of course, credit where credit is due, Killian did put some effort into planning. He combed through articles and gossip and rumors until he was sure he had the names of all those responsible. An Auror, her Legilimens sister, a pureblood wackjob and a muggle.

Attacking the Auror would send a clear message, but that could be dangerous. She probably had a partner, and her sister, well. Legilimens. Enough said. So that was two of the four definitely out.
The muggle would be the obvious choice, filthy, inferior, and non-magicial. But he had been obliviated, thus wouldn’t understand what he was being tortured for. Besides, he was under observation by MACUSA, and that damned Legilimens was occasionally one of his watchers.

That left the pureblood wackjob. Newt Scamander, younger brother of the war hero Theseus Scamander, British Ministry employee, and self-described ‘magizoologist,’ always prattling on about one beast or another. Expelled from Hogwarts and supposedly keeps a menagerie in his suitcase. Perfect.

Or not.

*****

Working with magical beasts is not easy. Working with magical beasts, in the wild, without backup, is even less so. And working with magical beast that have been held captive, and often abused, well. There’s a reason so many of Newt’s beloved creatures are considered dangerous.

Newt firmly believes that the rewards are more than worth the risks. Gaining the trust of some magnificent creature, learning all the secrets that no one else has ever bothered to even wonder about. Yes, to Newt it’s all worth the danger to himself, the peril of trying to save creatures that have been so maltreated that they treat everything around them as hostile.

Of course, Newt does make a point of learning as much as he can about a creature before he tries approaching one. He’s curious, not suicidal. Granted, in some (too many) cases ‘as much as he can’ amounts to a few paragraphs in an ancient tome, the authorities justification for killing them, and a legend or two. Unfortunate, but understandable, given that society is too busy being afraid to try to understand. Heedless of the fact that if they understood then maybe there wouldn’t be any reason to be afraid. Newt doesn’t understand people.

But Newt understands his creatures, and he understands that, no matter how much he hates, loathes, despises it, there are some he simply can’t save. And those few tend to be the most dangerous. They also tend to be found, often alongside beasts he can save, in the possession of poachers and smugglers who are quite unwilling to part with their source of income. He learns this lesson the hard way, and has more than one scar to show for it. Therefore, learning practical self-defense is not an option.

And learn Newt did. At Hogwarts Newt was a mediocre student at best, too focused on learning all he could about the grounds’ non-human residents to apply himself to his studies. But defense had ceased to be a boring, unnecessary distraction from his beloved creatures and become an absolutely essential skill. And so Newt threw himself into it with an enthusiasm he usually reserved for magical beasts. And he excelled at it. If Newt were the kind to show off, people would have been stunned. Newt had knack for charms, and his potions were decent, but overall he was considered a rather lackluster wizard. And yet, with only books to teach him, Newt mastered defensive charms at a level sufficient to defend himself from an enraged dragons in only six months, and over the following year became a duelist proficient enough to deal with all manner of poachers, thieves, and smugglers.

Newt never advertised his skill, though. He wasn’t shy about using it when he had to, but he never bragged or flaunted it. Thus, the knowledge of one Mr. Scamander’s lethality was limited to individuals involved in the criminal underground, mostly in the form of rumor and hearsay, because no self-respecting hardened criminal would admit that they were bested an awkward, unassuming, beanpole of a wizard. And of course lowly criminals were below the great Gellert Grindewald, and thus below his followers, so none of these rumors ever made it to Killian’s ears.

So when Killian and his compatriots planned their ambush of Newt Scamander the one thing they didn’t account for, was Newt Scamander himself.

Um, "Therefore, learning practical self-defense is not an option."? Is this a typo, because it seems to contradict everything else that's said around it.

Other than that, awesome start! I'm looking forward to more. :)

Dang it! I thought I caught all my mistypes. It should be "Therefore, learning practical self-defense is no longer optional."

It's okay. Mistakes happen. I'm pretty sure my fills are full of promblems like that. :) Sometimes you just need a spare set of eyes.

This is great so far! It feels like the start of a bedtime story, kind of. I can't wait to read the rest.
