Any/any or gen - All the Obscurial

(Anonymous) 2016-12-06 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
"It could be any one out of hundreds " -I can't remember the exact wording but Credence says something along these lines to Grindel!Graves about the superpower child he's looking for. And he's being very literal. Credence doesn't understand what makes one of them so much stronger or why Mr Graves is being so picky.

See, the thing about Mary Lou is that she adopts from families she knows/heavily suspects to be witches in the interest of "correcting" them in the eyes of God. Meaning that a lot of them have magic. And what do you get when you make kids suppress their magic?

Basically Mary Lou has created a whole pack of obscurials. Credence just happens to be the oldest and strongest.

Bonus1: this is why, apart from Credence and Chastity all the kids are so young. They're being killed by their obscurus.

Bonus 2: Obscurial!DecentHumanBeing!Chastity. (I know a lot of ficus put her on the same level as Mary Lou but she struck me as someone in a similar position to Credence, she just adapted differently to the treatment)

But how did Mary Lou adopt hundreds of children?

That's not sayign anything against your prompt - it's awesome - but it confused me in canon too.

she doesn't adopt hundreds, she runs some sort of soup kitchen so she feeds and comes in contact with hundreds of children a day. grindelwald said that the obscurus!child was close to credence and close to credence's mother, hence credence saying "it could be any of hundreds"

OH. Oh. Thank you. That makes more sense.

I follow the same logic as the anon above. Mary Lou seems to use her charity as a way to make the kids stay close/do what she wants. Add this with the fact that child protection laws around this time weren't exactly the best there likely wasn't much to stop her from continuously getting more kids even if it lead to overcrowding (which in turn would lead to issues such as disease making beds empty for the next load of children). in fact if none of the deaths could be directly linked to her (or weren't known to the public) then Mary Lou could have been seen as a role model to the community for looking after all those kids. Yes, it's wrong on so many levels but such things did historically occur and were sometimes even carried out by whole institutions (some examples include the Forgotten Australians and a number of orphanages Northern Ireland. A boys school in Florida was closed in 2011 due to a 111 year record of abuse. Again, wrong on so many levels but it did happen and that should not be forgotten)

On a lighter note, it could also be that Credence meant dozens but said hundreds in the way we would say we're "up to our eyeballs in work". It's not 100% accurate but it gives the scope and difficulty level to the person we're talking to.
