New Obscurial!Newt - canonical child character death

There was no shield spell capable of holding an obscurus so when Newt tried separating the one from the Sudanese girl he just hoped he was far enough from civilization that it wouldn't harm anyone before fizzling out of existence. He wasn't counting on it having enough primitive instinct to detect a new host. But it's fine; Newt's dealt with so many wild creatures it shouldn't be too difficult adjusting to having one inside him. And the obscurus takes a likely to it's new obscurial like every other fantastic beast Newt comes across . Sure, it flares up every now and then when Newt becomes overemotional in misguided attempts to get rid of whatever is bothering Newt but otherwise it's well behaved thus so long as he doesn't go into a high stress environment then Newt has everything under control he totally does stop laughing Pickett.

Frank really needs to get home because Newt is developing attachment issues and a boat trip followed by a trek through muggle America shouldn't be too much hassle, right?

tl;dr: In which obscurus latch onto magic people like horcruxes. The one in Sudan latches onto Newt.

Bonus for Graves/Newt and/or my kingdom for Grindelwald/Newt but it is by no means a deal breaker.

Double bonus for Pickett and the obscurus as bros united to keep Pickett's Tree-the Host-Newt safe.

Ooh, I like this idea. Been trying to come up with some legitimate way for Newt to be an obscurial despite being an adult and having gone through school, but this looks like a great way to make it happen! Even makes sense in a way, since parasites can't live without a host, so what exactly was that obscurus in his case feeding on?

Extra Brownie points to whoever fills this!

Decided I didn't have the patience to wait for someone to write this so thought I'd have a go at it myself. I'm planning an entire fic, starting from the beginning of the movies and going AU a little ways in, but this is just an excerpt. Very rough around the edges, but I hope it's enough to tide over anyone who wanted to read this prompt as much as I did until I get the time to properly write this one out!

*This will eventually have at least one-sided Grindelwald/Newt, with Grindelwald eventually trying to seduce Newt over to his side. Haven't decided yet whether he succeeds! ^.^

Newt held his breath as Goldstein flipped open the locks of his suitcase and lifted the cover. For a moment, he could only stare in confusion at the array of delicious looking pastries that sat where the ladder to his menagerie should have been.

Then the panic began to set in. His creatures! If they weren’t here, then they were somewhere out there! Among the muggles! If they got loose, who knew what might happen to them!

Most of the creatures in his care were rehabilitating. They wouldn’t stand a chance in the shark infested waters that were New York’s Streets!

Caught up in his frantic thoughts, Newt didn’t notice the rippling under his skin. The slight shimmer to the air like heat haze. Around them the candle flames shuddered, then all at once blew out.

The plunge into darkness pulled Newt from his thoughts enough to realize he was losing control. Closing his eyes, Newt did his best to calm his thoughts. Clear his mind. Those occlumency lessons Theseus had insisted on were proving quite helpful at the moment.

As he got a grip on his emotions, Newt heard Tina muttering off to the side about faulty everlight charms. He opened his eyes to find the auror looking around the now wand lit room in confusion. As he glanced at the other auror in the room, Newt couldn’t help taking a step back in shock. A pair of dark eyes stared at him from across the desk. The intensity behind that dark gaze sent a shiver down his spine.

It took him a moment to put a name to the look, but suddenly it came to him. Hunger.

It's probably a good thing I was alone when reading this as I may have done a rather stupid looking happy dance upon finding this.

Said dance may have been accompanied by happy screaming when I had finished reading.

I can't wait to see the rest :D

Anon, this is fantastic! I love Newt's description of Grindel!Graves; it made me shiver and feel that things aren't going to be nice.
