FILL: Real!Graves/Newt/GrindelGraves - Accidental soulmates

(Anonymous) 2016-12-12 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I apologise for the rushed work here! Will happily accept any corrections / nitpicks. I'm also working on a fairly fuzzy memory of the film so feel free to point out any inconsistencies there!

-----

Newt knew that he should have greater concerns than the man sat rifling through his paperwork across the desk from him, his face drawn into grim disapproval. The impending prison sentence he was about to be given for smuggling magical creatures for example. The potential banishment that would leave him unable to rehabilitate Frank. Worst of all, the possibility that the close-minded aurors around him might think some of his babies were dangerous instead of just a little playful and- and- He buried his teeth in his lip uncertainly.

Despite all these potentially concerning thoughts, it didn’t change the fact that his mind was continuously circling back to the Director. Director Graves. Newt flexed his shoulder blades as if he could feel the name burning between them.

It was a silly thought, of course. Newt knew that if it was Percival Graves sat in front of him, he would have known. Instinctively right, Theseus had described it. Like being caught by a siren, Leta had said. Instead there was a- a yearning, yes, his magic pulsing beneath his skin as if it were ready to come rushing out, but more – confused? Uncertain, perhaps. Newt couldn’t find the words to describe the prickling that sat beating beneath his heart.

Tina was jittering next to him, her leg bouncing up and down. She was nearly sheet white, the auror behind her looking distinctly unsympathetic with his wand resting lightly on her shoulder. He did hope she didn’t get into any trouble. It was all an innocent accident, after all.

Director Graves turned over another sheet with a hum and a frown on his face. Newt had to fight the mad instinct to try and smooth the scowl away, to chase the hum with a kiss. Don’t be ridiculous, he told himself. Simply because the man was attractive – but no, it was more than that. He was opening his mouth before he could think better of it, a hesitant stutter forcing it’s way out.

“May I – ah, I apologise, is your-“ The auror looked as though he were ready to hex Newt, but Graves stilled him with a raised hand. Newt swallowed desperately. “Are you Percival Graves?”

The man’s intense eyes focused on him and Newt found himself inhaling sharply.

“O’Brien, Goldstein, out now.”

“Sir!” Tina protested and Graves shot her glare that Newt was sure could have withered a tree to its roots.

O’Brien grabbed Tina’s shoulder, pulling her out of her chair and out of the room in one smooth movement. Barely half a second afterwards, a wordless burst of magic silenced the room and locked the door. Newt drove his fingernails into his hand as Graves – it had to be Percival, it had to be – finished reading the sheet he was on. Absently, Newt noted that it was his visa application.

“Newton Scamander,” Graves said finally, letting his eyes drift off the paperwork and fix on Newt’s own. A faint smile curled at the edges of his mouth and Newt felt dizzy. He’d seen those eyes in his dreams. He’d seen that smile in his dreams. The man shook his head. “This is not how I wanted to meet you.”

“I – ah – I am sorry,” Newt offered miserably and Graves laughed softly. There was an edge in that laughter that didn’t belong there, Newt thought, and then wasn’t sure why he thought that.

Newt hunched in on himself slightly. “Daisy didn’t mean to cause any trouble at the bank,” he said, a little defensively. “She just wanted a little exercise after being cooped up on the ship all day.”

Graves hummed, sounding unconvinced. “And the erumpent?”

“Milly’s in heat!” Newt exclaimed, confused how anyone could blame her for her behavior. “She didn’t want to harm anyone, it’s just her mate was caught by poachers over in Ecuador and she was just a bit frustrated, and she didn’t even do much damage-“

“Newton,” Graves said, and Newt looked up to see that he’d abandoned his seat, circling around his desk to loom over him. It was a very nice view, he found himself noting.

“Yes?” he squeaked out, and Graves reached out his left hand.

“My name is Percival.”

“Oh,” Newt said uncertainly. Then, “Oh. I didn’t think I’d find you. Theseus, the rat bastard, said I should go to New York but he-“

“Newton,” Graves said a little impatiently. He wiggled his fingers and Newt swallowed. Hardly daring to believe, he reached out, bracing himself for the explosion of magic that was to come – warm fingers brushed against his own –

There was a wisp, a brush of emotion flickering against him. His magic stretched out, hesitated – and then stretched out again, brushing against Graves’ deep, solid well. There was a curl, a twist inside of him, and he could feel Graves’ magic winding its way around him protectively. His back itched and burned, as if the name between his blades was reforming itself. It – something had happened, but – was that it? He cocked his head slightly, pushing out his magic, and Graves’ seemed to draw him in deeper, a Horntail wrapping herself around her eggs.

The whole damn world changes, Theseus had said. You know, you just know, that they’re going to be yours for the rest of eternity. This was good, but it wasn't -

“Newton,” Graves whispered hoarsely and Newt looked up to see the man looking almost wrecked, afraid and hopeful and desperately possessive. His wand was held loosely in his right hand, but now he blindly put it down on the desk so he could bring a hand up to trace over a cheekbone. “Oh, my Newton, my own, I never thought I’d have this.”

“Percival?” Newt said hesitantly, and there was a flicker of something in those dark eyes – rage, possessiveness, protectiveness, lust, Newt couldn’t quite place it. “Graves?” he corrected, then hesitantly, “Mr. Graves?”

Graves let out a choked laugh. “Just Graves for now,” he said. “In public. My Newton, my own.”

“I,” Newt said, and then hunched his shoulders. “I didn’t mean to cause all these problems,” he said softly. “I know it’s going to-“

“Sh,” Graves said, letting his hand trail down to push a finger against Newt’s lip. “You’re a damned liar, my own. A liar and a nuisance, and I’m sure trouble follows you wherever you go.” His voice was more fond than angry though, so Newt chanced pressing a shy kiss against the finger, glancing up between his eyelashes.

He wasn’t sure what he’d been hesitant about previously. Clearly Graves was his – his soulmate! He’d finally found the man. No wonder Theseus, rat bastard that he was, had suggested a stopover in New York before he headed to Arizona. So his magic hadn’t felt world-changing at first – it was still rich and deep and solid around him, as unyielding as steel bars as it wound its way around, a warm steadiness that had him certain he would not come to harm in this man’s care. The little flickers of unease were just because he hadn’t spent much time with humans recently. He’d never been good with humans. Percival would change that though, he was sure.

Graves was watching him as if he were a rabbit he was considering pouncing on and Newt shivered slightly. There was a disbelieving smile that twitched at the edges of his mouth, as if finding his name mate was such an unbelievable occurrence – so impossible – Newt found himself smiling back helplessly.

It seemed like it took immense effort for Graves to remove his hand and take a step back, letting out a long breath. “Really though, Newton,” he said in a conversational voice. “Did you really need to bring quite so many dark creatures with you in that case of yours? It’s not going to make it easy for us.”

Us! There was an us! Newt didn’t quite know how to deal with that, so he instead focused on the dire insult to his creatures.

“Dark is a terrible, pejorative term,” he informed Graves haughtily. “They’re not dark, they just get a little frightened by wizards sometimes. They’re perfectly sweet when treated right.”

“The nundu,” Graves said, his voice coated in disbelief. “Perfectly sweet.” He sighed, “My own-“

“Ned wouldn’t hurt a fly!” Newt protested. “He’s an absolute sweetheart, I promise you, I can introduce you-”

“Newton, my own,” Graves said firmly. “Nundu are capable of killing hundreds of wizards at a time. The obscurus you have caged up is a first – they die without their hosts.” There was an oddly covetous note in his voice, smothered with pride – pride in Newt? “The thunderbird-“

“Frank is lovely,” Newt said stoutly, and Graves let out a half-groan, half-laugh.

“You are going to give me nightmares, aren’t you?” he asked rhetorically.

“Really Graves,” Newt said, uncertain now. “I swear my creatures wouldn’t harm a thing, I promise I can control them, please, please don’t let them-”

“Sh-sh-shh,” Graves said, tugging at his hair lightly. “I’ll do what I can, my own.”

“And Tina?” Newt said hopefully.

Graves laughed. “She comes after your creatures then?” He seemed strangely pleased by this, and by the abashed look Newt cast at the ground. “I’ll do what I can.”

“Thank you,” Newt breathed and the look Graves fixed on him was all dark possession, fist knotting in his hair.

“Stay while I sort this out, hmm?” he said, finally disentangling himself and heading towards the door. Newt scrambled to his feet.

“I can help!”

Stay,” Graves repeated. Newt sank back into his chair slowly. He gnawed on his lip.

“Come back soon?” he asked hesitantly and Graves sent him a grin that was all teeth.

“Always for you, my own.”

Oh my god, this is amazing and I need more. Newt realising something is weird but not realising what! Grindelwald all possessive and covetous! I can't wait to see what happens once the real Graves is in the picture.
