Graves - the Vimes Approach
(Anonymous) 2016-12-15 04:06 am (UTC)(link)He really isn't. But after he was promoted to Director of Magical Law Enforcement, he thought that he should act with the dignity and decorum his station necessitated.
Post-Grindlewald (and post-rescue) he decides that obviously /that/ hadn't worked out. So he decides instead to fall back on what he /knows/ works.
Percival Graves' real attitude towards the Law and Doing His Goddamn Job is disturbingly reminiscent of that of Sir His Grace Sam Vimes.
Just - give me Vimes!style Graves, please?
Bonus:
+ Tina is /immediately/ promoted to his second in command, because apparently she's the only Auror in the entire goddamn /department/ who can tell the difference between the law and the Law. And yes, there is a difference, and it's called not letting someone abuse a child in front of you, YOU FUCKING IDIOTS HOW COULD YOU THINK THAT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO?!
++ The entire damn underworld tries to dive under the bed and hide when it becomes apparent that Percival 'Percy' Graves is back. And he is Not Happy.
+++ President Picquery is actually faintly nostalgic. She kinda missed this Graves.
++++ x Infinity: Graves has the same knee-jerk reaction to anything /resembling/ a King as Vimes.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-20 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)It's fitting that the first thing Percival Graves sees walking into his office on his first day is a pile of paperwork. An ever growing pile, if he's any judge*.
He just sighs at the pile, pushes it around until it looks like he might have actually read through it then takes a seat.
'Come in,' he says, as the person on the other side of his door finally raises their - her - hand to knock. There's a long moment between him speaking and the door opening.
Porpentina Goldstein pokes her head around the door, eyes wide. 'You wanted to see me Sir?' she asks.
Graves wishes he could roll his eyes but it might be a bit undignified. 'I'm not going to bite Goldstein. Take a seat.' She makes her way across the room, every step as measured as if Graves were a hippogriff not an Auror dumb enough to get himself locked in his own cellar for three months.
Course Graves is also someone who works with people who didn't notice he'd been replaced for three months, so maybe she has low standards.
Everyone in this place has low standards. Which is going to change.
Starting with Goldstein.
'You wanted to see me?' Goldstein repeats.
Graves nods. 'I read over why you were demoted-'
Goldstein's eyes go wide and she cuts him off. 'I can explain-'
'What's to explain?' Graves taps at a folder on his desk**. 'You saw a kid - a scared, abused kid - being attacked and you stopped it.' He feels a burst of amusement at the look on Goldstein's face. Dumbfounded doesn't begin to describe it. 'And for some reason the,' he bites back his first word, 'people around here saw that as a violation of the law.'
'But it was?' Goldstein says, looking at the ground. 'I exposed magic-'
'To protect a child. For fuck's,' Goldstein's glance jumps up to meet his eyes, her own eyes wide, 'sake, I'd only been gone a week at that point. There's breaking the law and there's breaking the Law and it seems people around here have forgotten that.'
Goldstein's eyes are so wide, Graves is tempted to ask if she's trying to transfigure them into dinner plates. 'Yes?'
'Would you do it again?'
Goldstein finally straightens her spine, her eyes getting a hard glint. 'Yes.'
'Good.' Graves nods to himself. 'Half my Aurors have been transferred and the other half were thick enough Grindelwald kept them around. Go through the application forms ah,' he taps his wand at the piles and a folder floats out to nudge Goldstein's head, 'there, see who's got potential. Start tracking down our transfers too - some of them might not want to come back so we'll have to replace them.'
'We'll?' Goldstein asks, pulling the folder into her lap.
Oh yeah. 'I want you as my second,' Graves says with a raised eyebrow. She goes to speak and he cuts her off. 'You stuck to your morals, even when it wasn't easy. You upheld the Law, even when told not to and I can use that.' He pauses for a moment, then adds, 'We'll need to train you out of thinking the law's set in stone - there was no need to bring in Scamander, not that second time - but we can work on that.'
Looking like she's been stunned, Goldstein gets out of the chair. Her legs shaking, she makes her way out of the room.
Graves smiles.
This is going to shake everything up.
Perfect.
*He is. Graves has decades of experience in watching piles of paperwork grow. This one gets an 8/10 for rapid appearance, but only 5/10 for size. Graves has seen bigger.
**Containing a bunch of reports of underaged magic, wand permits, and the menus for the cafeteria for the three months Graves was away*** but Goldstein isn't to know.
***Grindelwald's logic is beyond Graves; how those things are going to track down anything but scared non-Obscurial kids, foreigners, or lunch, Graves will never know.
