FILL: Real!Graves/Newt/GrindelGraves - Accidental soulmates - 5/?
(Anonymous) 2016-12-20 01:25 am (UTC)(link)Newt watched Ned pounce on the antelope with a careful eye. The nundu seemed happy enough with his food for the moment, but it would probably do best to bring down some live prey soon. Ned could get a little twitchy when left without something to occupy him for too long.
“Hmm?” he said, with some distraction. “Ah, yes, I did – Ironbellies for the most part.” He didn’t much like talking about his time in the war. Creatures had no place in human wars and it had wounded him to the core for every scar he’d had to patch up on his beauties. “No need to keep them though,” he said, moving away from Ned now that he was satisfied the nundu was eating. “The reserves do well enough to care for dragons for all that they like to bleed the dragons regularly, and besides, they’re pack creatures at heart. Keeping one alone down here would be cruel.”
“Really?” Graves said. “I was always under the impression they were solitary creatures.”
“Common misconception,” Newt said. He levitated a few buckets of pellets for the mooncalves. “Understandable, though – their territory range is so large that a flight might seem like a number of solitaries each with their own territories. Horntails are the most isolated of the dragon breeds I’ve come across and even they tend towards a minimum flight of three adults at any one time.”
“Fascinating,” Graves said and Newt checked on him with some surprise. There was no sarcasm in his soul mate’s voice though and the man looked more contemplative than bored.
“The reserves must be difficult though,” he said after a moment. “Given their territory range is, as you say, so large.”
“Difficult?” Newt asked. He chanced another look at Graves under his eyelashes even as Reginald and Nigel competed for the last of the pellets.
“To keep that kind of area away from no-majes,” Graves clarified and Newt felt his lips twist slightly.
“It hasn’t been easy to convince the ministries of the dragons’ need,” he admitted with some reluctance. “And it does take a lot a man-power. Fortunately,” and he could feel the distaste that seeped into that word, “Dragon parts have enough magical uses that it’s worth the investment. Merlin forbid that we run out of heartstrings for their children’s wands after all,” he grumbled.
Graves hummed softly. “It’s a shame,” he said, watching the mooncalves with a certain softness around his eyes. “A damned shame that so many magical creatures are forced to hide away. I imagine that their territories are proving more and more difficult to keep safe nowadays.”
Newt felt a rush of fondness for his soul mate – to meet someone who understood! “Absolutely,” he said eagerly. “I know of at least seven extinctions that have occurred over the last decade. We just simply aren’t taking care of the creatures in this world and it’s a terrible shame – we’re losing so much to our own ignorance. Why, Solomon and Delilah are among the last breeding pair of Graphorn in the world. If serious action isn’t taken soon, they’ll be gone too in a decade or so.”
The thought made him feel a little ill and he stared solemnly at the capering mooncalves for a while. They, at least, were in no danger of extinction. As long as cows were miscarrying there would be these sweet creatures dancing in the world.
An arm wrapped around his shoulder and Newt let out a sigh as he leaned into Graves’ shoulder. “It’s an absolute tragedy,” he said mournfully and Graves tucked his magic around him comfortingly.
“A tragedy that needs solving one way or another, my own,” he agreed solemnly and Newt frowned a little, wondering what was meant by that. He’d wracked his brains for a solution every since he’d received his discharge, ever since he’d turned to wandering the world instead of working in ministry as Theseus had hoped he would. There had been nothing that he could come up with however.
“Is that everything fed?” Graves asked, before the silence stretched into discomfort.
Newt ran through his creatures thoughtfully, ticking them off one by one, before nodding. “I think you’ve met them all now,” he said, with a shy smile directed at Graves. It had been a rare pleasure directing his bond mate around his case; Graves had been so interested in all of his creatures, asking intent questions and getting in close to all but the most dangerous of them. He’d been especially inquisitive about some of Newt’s rarer beasts, Ned and Frank in particular, which had surprised Newt somewhat. He’d thought there would have been a few more pointed questions about permits but there had been nothing save amused tolerance.
“Then perhaps,” Graves said, hooking a finger into one of Newt’s belt loops, “We might talk about finding a bed for tonight, my own? It is getting a little late.”
Newt flushed under Graves’ eyes, unable to meet his gaze for a second. “It has been a long day,” he admitted in a strangled voice. “I think I would welcome somewhere to lie down.”
Graves’ smile reminded Newt of nothing more than Ned’s self-satisfaction after a good meal, settling a quiver deep in his stomach. He couldn’t help the eagerness that leapt within him though. There was a part of him desperate to see his own name scrawled over his soul mate’s skin and he couldn’t help but suspect it was the same for Graves. Names were a powerful thing, after all.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-20 03:14 am (UTC)(link)Grindelgraves is one sneaky Dark Lord, laying down the foundation to convince Newt to join his cause.
And I wonder how thick Graves' home walls are? Lols. It would be the worst torture Grindelgraves could put Graves through.
Thanks for writing! :)

(Anonymous) 2016-12-20 03:20 am (UTC)(link)I was so happy to see this! There needs to be more GrindlNewt in the world, even if it's under false pretenses.
I have to wonder, did Grindelwald see the Obscurus? Or does Newt not have it in this story?
Anyways can't wait to read more!
