OFF-TOPIC POST

Please don't post prompts here. This is for off-topic discussion only.

The screenplay just describes the building in that scene as an "isolated, derelict chateau". It's possible it could be Nurmengard, or later became Nurmengard, but I haven't seen any actual proof or evidence of that.

I honestly don't see the point of the word limit - if a prompt is too long/detailed for you to want to write, you can always just ignore it and move on.

I agree. Why limit details that may help to inspire a filler?

Wait, I think I saw that prompt... I didn't think it was over 250 words anyway??

I don't understand relying on official word* of a character's age to embrace a ship. Also, would his being 17 vs 18 vs 21 really make that much difference? Base your decision on whether or not you're 'allowed' to enjoy it on your own instincts, and be mindful of how your question, innocent though it may have been, can seem like condemnation to a contingent of fans already being shamed by some who don't like a particular pairing.

*The screenplay is as good as we're likely to get here

It wasn't.

It was 322 according to my word counter, but I agree that the rule's limiting; we could set it to ~500 or so (to prevent those really, really long prompts) but honestly I think just a general 'please try not to write many paragraphs' is a good enough rule.

(I posted a prompt recently that was just under because I made sure, but a few word either way wouldn't have mattered, surely? It does seem limiting.)

I haven't been on too many other kinkmemes, but I've never seen another one with a word limit for prompts

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I have (250 words/prompt plus up to 3 bonuses) but the kinkmeme was huge and really fast-paced. I don't think it's necessarily needed here.

Re: The 250 words rule

I actually really like this rule. Long prompts clog a page, especially if you're on mobile, and short prompts kinda get lost in between. Also, if you need to write in so many details into your prompt that it exceeds 250 words, you kinda don't have a prompt but a story that you should really just write yourself.

That said, I won't cry if the rule gets repelled but I honestly think it helps keeping the meme readable.

Thank you - I agree with your points here, but I was afraid of sounding too rude to bring them up myself.

I think it's a little too restrictive. Maybe up it at 500 as suggested or make it more an advice than a rule?

Anyone have any details on the ranges/limitations of different kinds of wizarding transport? I know JKR has said apparition is limited to places you know, and gets riskier over longer distances. But how far can floo/portkeys go? Are there any other kinds of long-distance transport or are muggle steamer ships it for inter-continental journeys?

Re: Questions About Canon

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think we're meant to understand Floo as a sort of in-country network for transport since there's no evidence of using it for international travel or fire-calls in the books. It also doesn't appear to be anything like a Floo network in FBAWTFT, but I don't know that JKR has actually said anything about it.

Port-keys I'm not sure about, but they're probably the best bet for use.

Not sure where you got your info, but I highly recommend this one http://archiveofourown.org/works/403644 for understading omegaverse aka Alpha/Beta/Omega dynamics for someone who is not so familiar with it.

And if you are looking for similar trope(s) to ABO you can try Guide/Sentinel (I am s Sci-Fi noob)

notifications of closed rounds?

There are STILL people posting prompts to round 1. Could a mod perhaps update the post with a notice that it's closed?

(It's kind of annoying if you're hoping maybe someone's commented on your fill and it's just someone prompting and then saying "oops, wrong place".)

Believe it or not, there are some parts of the world where reading/writing explicit fiction involving fictional underage characters isn't always legal. So some people would rather avoid stories about underage characters for that reason.

If we're talking about abuse and grooming though, age itself isn't deterministic of a person's vulnerability to either. Whatever his age, in the film Credence was subjected to abuse and grooming. So yeah, I'm also struggling to understand why Credence being a technical adult would somehow make that abuse and grooming... less wrong?

Every km I've been to has had a prompt word limit. I personally think it improves the km experience. I scroll through new prompts on my phone sometimes and those long overly detailed prompts are incredibly annoying. But then I'm not the type of person who would ever fill something that nitpicky/over explained that it would take so many words.

You might be looking for a BDSM AU if you're just interested in a world with dom/subs. Harry Potter fandom also has a long history of creature fics if you want going into heat/bio/mate stuff.

Perhaps you could request a veela fic with knotting or heat but no mpreg? I know I've read veela fic in the past that had elements of ABO but wasn't completely in line with the tropes.

Advice on AO3 character tags?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-22 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
If one were, say, writing a fic with a Graves who was not Grindelwald, but did in fact act quite a bit like Grindel!Graves and simply ignored any plot elements having to do with Johnny Depp, what would be the best way to tag this on AO3? Tagging Grindel!Graves wouldn't make sense in context, but the character as written is not anything like how Original!Graves is commonly assumed/accepted to be. After taking a look through the Archive I haven't been able to find much precedent, so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Advice on AO3 character tags?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-22 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say tag it as Original Percival Graves, and mention in the notes that your characterisation of Graves is darker than most people seem to headcanon him, just like you've explained here.

Popular fanon isn't canon. Graves is still a mostly unknown character, and your darker Graves is every bit as valid as anyone else's Graves headcanons.

Re: Advice on AO3 character tags?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-22 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 to what the other anon said; tag it with Original Graves and if you like, a 'dark!Graves' tag or something similar, or mention it in the notes. Some people write Grindelwald-supporter Graves, which is another valid interpretation! We don't exactly have enough information on Graves to tell.

OP

Thank you! That makes sense and seems reasonable. And I definitely appreciate the reminder and support about all character interpretations being valid :)

Spelling/capitals

(Anonymous) 2017-01-23 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Newt's Niffler or Newt's niffler?

A no-maj (adj) car and a No-Maj's (noun) car, or capitals all around?

This has been harping on my mind. I haven't bought the script yet, so I don't know what JKR's position on the matter is. Iirr (my HP books are at my parents'), "a Muggle" as a not-wizard was spelled with a capital M, but I can't remember if it was used as an adjective and if the adjective was capitalized. Aargh!

Re: Spelling/capitals

(Anonymous) 2017-01-23 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
When in doubt, assume that JKR would capitalize it. She hits that shift key like her life depends on it.

This isn't real helpful for FBAWTFT, but here's a great resource for spellings and caps and all for the older material: https://legacy.hp-lexicon.org/help/potterwords-removed.html
