The newest were thin lines blooming over his chest and arms, raised and dark against his skin like only new scars could be, and he spent more time covering them with thick paste than actually thinking on the patterns Pickett pointed out. They’d never fully go away; curse scars tended toward that, often lingering decades after the event. Newt wasn’t sure he’d like to remember how much of a bitter failure trying to save Credence had been.

His hands shook now, too.

Rubbing the bridge of his nose with a sigh and breathing in the lingering medicinal smell, the younger Scamander stared down at his palms, the trembling appendages both disconcerting and fascinating. They felt like they weren’t his own, despite knowing he’d gotten the silvery scar across his palm from a unicorn’s horn and the mottled, unevenly spaced ring circling the base of his thumb from a wounded murtlap. A nick on his wrist that hadn’t healed quite right was from his own stupidity, climbing up a rather aggressive tree after a neighbour’s kneazle.

Slowly, Newt traced the pale, jagged line that spanned the entire length of his right pinky.

Jarvey, he knew.

Miserable thing had called him dung-breath and hadn’t liked being moved out of Mother’s garden one bit. Leta had liked it, though. Hadn’t liked seeing bone or the blood, but she’d adored the jarvey.

Newt steered himself away from those thoughts before they could go any further, tucking his bare back against the cold wall of the steamship and tilting his head back to close his eyes. Cataloging the different marks was one thing, but the memories associated with each one were not something he looked forward to. Most were mistakes and, even in his fairly short twenty-nine years in the world, he’d made many, many mistakes.

The twinge of taut skin every time he tried to bend over made that obvious.

The remains of sharp teeth made sure he would never be as limber as he used to, but he didn’t hold a grudge against the nundu. It had only been protecting its cub, after all, and all humans looked the same in a panic. He was probably lucky it had only bitten him, though Theseus had thrown an absolute fit over that particular incident.

Newt took a breath.

The first he remembered getting was on his ankle. An adder bite, the scars so old they were practically invisible. But he knew exactly where they were, fingers caressing the skin through his sock. That, and the regrown flesh splotching his entire torso - slightly paler than his normal skin tone - from his time with the dragons, were the only times he’d ever felt like he was going to actually die.

His hands were shaking again.

He could feel the trembling against the tops of his thighs, spreading his fingers out as far as they could and trying to calm himself down. It wasn’t really working. Scrubbing his palm against the side of his face, Newt opened his eyes before scooting towards the edge of the cot and swinging his legs onto the floor.

His creatures would take his mind off the past that he couldn’t change. They always did.

Jacob has magical creature blood.
His grandmother, bless her, used to say that they used to feed on Witches, and he thought that was just an odd story. No such thing as magic after all.

Then he's exposed to all of this magic and is the target of spells and potions. Instead of affecting him, they are absorbed. He functions as a magic vampire and sink, drawing magic out of the air, destroying slowly the enchantments on objects he holds, etc.

He begins to absorb more and more, and no one realizes what is going on until Newt returns- and by then Jacob needs magic, to feed on and consume magic, to live.

Whatever other creature effects are up to Author- would appreciate some element of transformation etc.

Super Bonus-

Wizards hunted whatever the magical race/creatures, thus them hiding among muggles.

The question made Newt jump, so lost was he in his memories of before. He looked around, trying to work out who had spoken, and smiled a little at Jacob standing in front of him.

"Hmm? Yes, I'm fine, thank you."
"You looked pretty distracted." Jacob said, holding out a pastry. Newt noted in some relief that it wasn't shaped after one of his creatures, but was instead in the shape of a suitcase. He devoured it with a smile.

"Just thinking."
"They didn't look like good thoughts." Jacob said, and Newt shrugged.
"They weren't." He admitted after a moment. "I was thinking about... how you and Queenie are so happy together, and Tina's got her job, and Theseus has Percival... and no one needs me." He shrugged. "I'm not... I'm not wired right. So no one's going to need me. And no one will care if... If I disappear. It'll get to the point where I'm too annoying, and then I will have to leave..." He shivered and closed his eyes.
"I don't think I can face that."
"You .." Jacob frowned, and sat down beside Newt, guiding Newt to lean into his side. "You're being serious, aren't you?"
"Always." Newt admitted. "That's part of the problem. Other people say jokes or they're sarcastic and I don't... I don't realise. And I try..." He looked up at Jacob, eyes shining. "I try to make people happy, to fit in. Only... it doesn't work out. I try, and whatever I do... I don't fit. I'm a spare piece. Normally it's okay. I've got my creatures and I'm happy but... my creatures like it here too. I don't want to tell them we have to leave. And I... I like it. This is... this is the first place that's felt like home since I got kicked out of school..."

Newt wasn't entirely sure when he had started crying, only that the warm arms wrapping around him felt safe. He leaned in closer, trembling in Jacob's hold, and Jacob ran his fingers through Newt's hair. It was soothing, and Newt let himself cry for a little while before looking up at him.
"I'm sorry." He whispered.

"No sorries." Jacob murmured. "You can't help what you're thinking, even though it's wrong. Because trust me, all of us, we like you being here. You brought us together Newt. If it wasn't for you... I'd still be in the canning factory, and Queenie would be lonely, and Tina'd be in the wand permit office and Percival would still be goodness knows where. But... that's not why we like you being here."

"Oh?" Newt whispered, and there was a hint of terror in his voice which made Jacob want to retch. He reached out and squeezed Newt's hand.
"We like you being here because you are our friend Newt. You are our friend and we care about you, and we want you here. You have to believe me."

"I don't... I don't see why-" Newt murmured, and Jacob hugged him tighter.
"Because you can't see what we see when we look at you. When we look we see a hero, and it doesn't matter if you can't see that. We'll see it for you. We aren't going to give you up and we aren't going to go away Mister Scamander, so you're stuck with us."

Jacob's voice filled Newt with confidence, and he leaned in so that his head was resting on Jacob's shoulder.
"I'm... I'm really not in the way?" Newt whispered, and Jacob shook his head.
"Not at all Newt. This is our family, and you're part of it. Look, would you like me to talk to the others about it?" Jacob asked, and Newt nodded quietly.

"I just... I worry you're being nice to me because you feel you have to. Because I'm... because you feel someone has to-"
"You aren't a burden Newt." Jacob said, and he said it with such conviction that Newt nearly believed it. "You're our friend, and we are glad to have you. Please, don't think that we aren't glad you're here..." He paused. "I'm going to talk to the others. And we're going to make sure you know you're loved. I'm going to make you a cake, and then we can all eat it together and celebrate our friendship, how does that sound?"

Newt thought for a moment, and then nodded quickly.
"Really... that, uh... that sounds pretty good. Thank you..."
Jacob smiled, and gave his shoulders another gentle squeeze.

Some people in the wizarding world have soulmates. It doesn't mean the soulmates need to end up together or aren't able to resist the other, but it does mean that, regardless of anything or one, someone with a soulmate will always love the other in whatever capacity he/she can.

When Grindelwald kidnapped Graves, the two accidently found out that they were soulmates. Grindelwald's still an evil bastard and isn't above hurting Graves. However, the soulmate bond ensures that he feel some attraction towards Graves, and this comes out as possessiveness. Graves, for his part, hates how he feels and mentally rebels against the bond. He's well-aware of what Grindelwald is and doesn't plan on giving into him. But he still feels a need to be with him, which makes everytime Grindelwald hurts him worse.
